Russian chess player tries to poison opponent during match
In surveillance footage before the start of a renowned chess tournament on August 2, Russian chess star Amina Abakarova is seen smearing mercury from a thermometer on the chess board at the side of her rival.
30-year-old Umayganat Osmanova fell seriously ill after her match against Russia's Amina Abakarova. She suffered from severe dizziness and nausea. Surveillance footage showed what was going on: Russian chess star Amina Abakarova was trying to poison her rival. In a high dose, mercury can even be lethal.
Abakarova has since been arrested and now risks a prison sentence of up to three years if convicted.
