Harsh verdict for Remco Evenepoel
Remco Evenepoel was involved in an accident on training in Belgium on Tuesday morning. He was taken by ambulance to the nearby Erasmus hospital in Anderlecht.
According to his father, contacted by Sporza, Remco fell after the door of a Bpost van swung open. The cyclist did not lose consciousness and was taken away by ambulance.
His bike was broken in two in the accident. Remco remained conscious and sat upright after the fall.
The verdict is harsh for team manager Patrick Lefevere's champion: bruising to both lungs, a collarbone luxation and three fractures (to his rib, right shoulder blade and his right hand).
On the operating table as early as Tuesday evening
‘The collarbone will be operated on tonight, which - if the operation is successful - should allow Remco to leave hospital tomorrow (Wednesday). After that, an immobilisation period (a period of flat rest, ed.) of two weeks will be required, after which a plan can be made for his return to training,’ it further sounded on Tuesday night.
It remains to be seen what the impact will be on his winter preparation and his 2025 schedule.
