At least 50 dead in football riots
At least 50 people were killed in the south-eastern African country of Guinea on Sunday in riots between supporters during a football match at a tournament in honour of the current interim president.
After a questionable decision by the referee, fans stormed the pitch and all hell broke loose. Some sources speak of as many as 100 dead, while others speak of at least 50 dead. Footage on social media showed the lifeless bodies lying on the football field after the horrific supporters' violence ended.
According to the African press, the tournament was in honour of the leader of the military junta, General Mamadi Doumbouya. He came to power in a coup in 2021 and has since ruled as interim president.
