Rwanda aims to host F1 Grand Prix
Rwanda has expressed its desire to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix, as announced by its President, Paul Kagame.
The FIA, the governing body of motorsport, has been in discussions with the African nation for several months and is reportedly supportive of bringing a race back to the continent. South Africa remains the only African country to have previously hosted a Formula 1 race.
During the FIA's General Assembly, the Rwandan head of state announced that the country had officially submitted a bid to host a Formula 1 event.
Paul Kagame said: "I am happy to formally announce that Rwanda is bidding to bring the thrill of racing back to Africa, by hosting a Formula 1 grand prix.A big thank you to [F1 president] Stefano Domenicali and the entire team at F1 for the good progress in our discussions so far."
"I assure you we are approaching this opportunity with the seriousness and commitment it deserves," the Rwandan leader added.
If approved, the race would take place on a circuit near Bugesera Airport, located south of the capital, Kigali.
