Swede Almgren improves European record over 10km in Valencia

12 January 2025 - Another historic start to the running year in Valencia. The 10K Valencia Ibercaja by Kiprun lived up to all expectations and immediately made athletics history on the second Sunday of the year. At this 17th edition, which was run in pleasant sunshine and brisk winds, a new European record was set for the men.

The winner of the race, Swedish athlete Andreas Almgren, is the one who conquered the European 10K record by finishing in 26:53. With this cracking performance, he outperforms the previous European record held by Frenchman Etienne Daguinos (27:04, Lille 2024).

Swede Almgren was joined on the podium by Dominic Lobalu (26:54) and Vincent Langat (26:55) after a tight and exciting sprint finish. In the women's race, the overall winner was Hellen Ekalale from Kenya (29:30), followed by Girmawit Gebru from Ethiopia (29:34) and Foyten Tesfay (29:42).

As many as 13,046 runners were at the start of this race, known as the fastest 10km in the world.
