Lance Armstrong opens up about alcohol addiction: 'Quitting was my best decision ever'

'That was then, this is now': these are the words that appear behind the ex-racer on a piece of art on the wall in a photo that Lance Armstrong posted on his social media. The 53-year-old American former cyclist disclosed in the post that he struggled with alcohol addiction for years, but has now been sober for a year.

The American former cyclist who lost all his Tour victories due to years of doping decided a year ago that enough was enough and quit alcohol.

He begins his message by referring to the artwork on the wall. “It's a piece I've drawn a lot of inspiration from over the last few years, but today - on the exact same date - everything is different and so is the inspiration. A year ago, I decided that my relationship with alcohol was over and no longer in my best interest. Nor in that of my family, friends and all the people around me. Everything in life is either a pump or a drain, an enrichment or a burden. Alcohol became the latter, a burden. A negative thing for me. Quitting it was my decision and today I feel it is my best decision I have ever made. Six months ago I said there was a voice in my head that I finally listened to. A year later, I still hear that little voice, and now it just says, “Hey Lance, I'm very proud of you. It makes my day every time I hear that.”
