Terrifying, 11 orcas let loose on a Belgian couple
Wim and his wife Dana are still struggling to recover from the shock. Originally from Muizen in Belgium, they had planned to cross the Bay of Biscay by boat, when 11 orcas decided to attack them.
This Sunday, the couple was near La Coruña, off the coast of Spain, when the boat they were travelling on got hit. “There were impacts against the boat. As if we had hit something. Suddenly, I saw an orca surfacing next to our boat. Very close. If I had reached out, I could have touched it,” Wim told the Belgian daily HLN. While the Belgian tried to steer the sailboat away, 3 or 4 other attacks took place against the boat. “Then the boat was immobilized. All we could do was turn 360 degrees. The sailboat was out of control.”
Luckily, the couple were able to show great composure and follow the emergency procedure. Help arrived on the scene after an hour… Barely 30 minutes after the call, the orcas reappeared, attacking the sailboat again.
Today, Wim says that the boat has suffered considerable damage and will have to be taken out of the water to be repaired. “We don’t expect to get it back before winter. We will now return to Belgium on our own and pick it up later.”
The 11 orcas were clearly in the middle of a hunting session. According to some Spanish media, they attacked three other boats.
