Trump pardons 1,500 Capitol assailants

In the first hours of his new term, President Donald Trump signed a multitude of executive orders on immigration, the economy and the federal government.

After promising a “golden age” and an “end to decline” for the United States and attacking the previous administration, Trump assured that he would end environmental and LGTBIQ+ rights measures or impose ironclad border defense by declaring a “national emergency” in Mexico. Trump revoked some 80 executive orders signed by Biden.

Another of his most controversial decisions was the one concerning the assault on the Capitol. He announced several weeks ago that he would pardon the institution's assailants on January 6, 2021, when they protested against election results that gave Biden victory. Five people were killed.

On his first day in office, the President pardoned the vast majority of those convicted of the Capitol attack. Some 1,500 people benefited from this measure, including 14 commutations for members of the radical groups Oath Keepers and Proud Boys.
