Jesus was not called Jesus, scientists say
Jesus likely did not go by that name during his lifetime, according to scientists who believe he had a different name or nickname.
The name "Jesus" has been mistranslated numerous times across languages and eras. It wasn’t until the 16th century that English translators standardized the name as "Jesus."
Linguists suggest his name was not "Christ" but rather a name tied to his birthplace, Nazareth. This means his true name might have been "Yeshu Nazareen."
Professor Dineke Houtman, an expert in the relationship between Judaism and Christianity, explained:"We cannot know for sure which languages Jesus spoke. However, given his family background in Nazareth, we can assume his day-to-day language was Aramaic."
Experts assert that the name “Jesus” did not exist during the time he lived.
Dineke Houtman added: "His name would probably have been in Aramaic—Yeshua. It is likely that this is also how he introduced himself. Another possibility is the shorter form, Yeshu, which appears in later rabbinic literature."
