Crying child indirectly causes death of truck driver (34)

A 34-year-old Polish truck driver died in a road accident in West Flanders on Tuesday evening.

A 30-year-old woman at the wheel of a passenger car deviated from her lane on a bridge over the Leie in Wielsbeke because she wanted to comfort her crying little daughter in the back seat. As a result, she was distracted for a moment and suddenly drove into the lane of oncoming traffic. At that moment, a truck was just coming off the lane. The woman deviated from her lane and collided with the left side of her car with the truck coming from the other direction. In extremis, the Polish truck driver was no longer able to avoid the car, and tumbled through the guardrail of the bridge into the water with his truck. Bystanders who saw the crash happen still jumped into the water to try to free the driver from his cab, but they were unsuccessful. The devastation and human toll are enormous.
