France on the edge as government nears fall
Michel Barnier’s government could collapse as early as midweek, with two motions of no confidence filed on Monday.
The Prime Minister invoked Article 49.3 to push through the 2025 social security budget in the National Assembly. This move prompted La France Insoumise to submit a no-confidence motion, followed shortly by another from the Rassemblement National.
By midweek, lawmakers will vote on whether to approve these motions, potentially bringing down the current government.
The vote is scheduled for Wednesday, as the French constitution mandates a 48-hour delay between the filing of a motion of no confidence and the vote. In its motion, the Rassemblement National criticized the government for ignoring its proposals.
Marine Le Pen said: "The French are fed up with being threatened and mistreated (...) We cannot leave the situation as it is."
