Spanish football's surprising hold on European football
Teams from Spain’s La Liga reign supreme in European football. For the fifth year in a row, there will be two Spanish clubs in the semi-finals of the Champions League.
FC Barcelona qualified for the semi-finals on Tuesday night, without the slightest problem, by eliminating PSG. The Catalans join the final four of European football for the eighth time in ten years. A feat that illustrates the hold, even the stranglehold of the Blaugranas on modern football.
But it's not only the red and blue team that can boast. In fact, all the big names in Spain can swell their chests.
Because this year again, La Liga will send two of its representatives to the semi-finals of the Champions: Barça and the winner of Real Madrid-Atletico, to be played this Wednesday evening.
This is already the fifth season in a row that Spanish clubs have been playing at this level. Real Madrid and Barcelona (seasons 10/11, 11/12, 12/13), Real Madrid and Atlético (season 13/14) have each time managed to reach the last four.
