Tinnitus: a mystery solved at last
A disorder that affects about 10% of the population and significantly impacts the quality of life of those who suffer from it. Today, there is hope for a cure...
According to a study conducted by the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Institute (United States), there is a correlation between tinnitus and a loss of the auditory nerve. A link that cannot be detected by conventional hearing tests. Indeed, research has shown that tinnitus is caused by specific lesions of the auditory nerve, causing hyperactivity of the neurons in the brainstem. Hyperactivity would be a response of the brain to compensate for this loss of the auditory nerve, inducing what is called "phantom noises". A scientific advance that confirms the hypothesis that tinnitus can also occur in people with completely normal hearing.
