‘Russia picked target in Poland’
Last week, a new US air defence base was opened in the northern Polish village of Redzikowo, near the Baltic Sea. Russia responded with threatening language.
The US base is part of a NATO missile shield designed to intercept short- and medium-range ballistic missiles. A Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson spoke of it as ‘a provocative step in a series of deeply destabilising actions’ by the United States and NATO allies in the strategic sphere. She said that ‘due to the nature and seriousness of the threats posed by Western military facilities, the military base in Poland has long been on the list of possible targets. Possible attacks on these targets, she said, could be carried out with a wide range of advanced weapons.’
Poland's foreign ministry stresses that the new base is intended for defence and not to attack.
