Trump counterattacks against American media
News organizations are on high alert after President-elect Donald Trump decided to continue to sue media outlets and influencers for defamation over their coverage of the US presidential election.
Donald Trump said at a press conference at Mar-a-Lago: "It costs a lot of money, but we have to fix the press."
According to Axios, Donald Trump has decided to sue the Des Moines Register for defamation over a pre-election poll that showed him trailing in Iowa. The Register's parent company, Gannett Co., said today that the lawsuit is without merit and vowed to vigorously defend the newspaper's First Amendment rights.
Mr. Trump has also filed a $10 billion lawsuit against CBS over an interview with Vice President Harris on "60 Minutes."
Last year, a federal judge in Florida dismissed a $475 million lawsuit against CNN.
While Trump has a long history of suing media companies, he doesn’t have a winning record.
But even a losing lawsuit takes a lot of time and resources to defend, and of course a lawsuit can damage a news organization’s reputation no matter the outcome.
