Food dropped on the floor: the 5-second rule is a myth!
American researchers have proven, with laboratory tests, that the famous 5-second rule when dropping food on the floor was a preconceived idea.
Do you apply the 5-second rule when dropping food on the floor? According to this age-old trick, food that has fallen on the floor and remains on the floor for less than 5 seconds can be eaten without danger, because bacteria would not have had time to attach to it. According to American researchers, this is a preconceived idea, totally false, which is more of a popular wisdom than scientific reality.
Researchers analyzed the behavior of bacteria on different types of tiles. They sterilized them before contaminating them with E. coli bacteria. They then placed food on them and left them there for 5 seconds, 10 seconds, 20 seconds, etc.
Verdict: all foods had been contaminated in exactly the same way!
However, the cleaner and drier the floor, the lower the risk of pathogenic bacteria. Food that can be rinsed after falling on the floor is also safer.
