Greenland: Denmark to bolster defense capacities after Donald Trump’s remarks

Denmark is set to bolster Greenland’s defenses following repeated statements by Donald Trump expressing his desire to take control of the Arctic territory.

The Scandinavian government has unveiled a major plan to enhance the defense capabilities of the small nation as the incoming U.S. president considers asserting control over it.

Without revealing specifics, Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen told the local media outlet Jyllands-Posten that the government will invest several billion Danish kroner to upgrade Greenland’s defense systems.

Last weekend, Donald Trump posted on the social media platform Truth Social that the United States intends to acquire and take control of Greenland for "purposes of national security and freedom throughout the world".

While Greenland has its own government, it remains affiliated with the Kingdom of Denmark. The territory was a Danish colony until 1953, when it was reclassified as a region of the Scandinavian nation.

Greenland is also part of Denmark’s constitution, making its residents Danish citizens.
