Nearly 100 killed in landslides in India

At least 93 people have been killed and dozens more injured in the southern Indian state of Kerala in multiple landslides caused by torrential rains.

The landslides, particularly in the Wayanad district, uprooted trees, brought down communication lines, flooded roads and washed away a bridge. The hilly terrain complicates rescue efforts to reach about 600 residents in the worst-hit villages. The death toll is expected to rise.

For the rescue operations, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged federal aid, while local authorities have declared a two-day mourning period. Extreme weather conditions and Kerala's topography have exacerbated the region's vulnerability to such disasters. The Wayanad region, a major tourist destination, has seen an increase in tourism after Covid, with more than 20 million visitors by 2023.
