Born on September 15: Camélia Jordana, “New Star” honoured with Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters

Camélia Jordan was born on September 15, 1992 in Toulon. Granddaughter of Algerian immigrants, she grew up alongside her brother and sister. She inherited her gift and passion for singing from her mother, an amateur opera singer, who enrolled her in piano and drama lessons at a young age.

At sixteen, the young woman decides to try her luck and sign up for the famous M6 talent show, "La Nouvelle Star". This was already the seventh season of the show that had, before her, brought Julien Doré and Amel Bent to the forefront. After a successful casting in Marseille, Camélia Jordana chose to appear before the jury by performing "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong. The audience was won over, followed by the judges who praised the young woman's performance as well as her jazzy voice. Although she was ultimately eliminated in the semi-finals, Camélia Jordana had already stolen the audience's hearts, who criticized her elimination from the competition.

After this experience, the young artist signed a contract with Sony Music and presented, in 2010, her first album, simply named "Camélia Jordana". The first extract "Non, non, non (Écouter Barbara)" was an immediate success. Eight months after its release, her album was awarded a platinum disc (more than 110,000 copies sold).

In 2012, she took her first steps into an acting career, first in the movie "La stratégie de la poussette" in which she played a supporting role, then on television where she appeared alongside Daniel Prévost in a TV movie. Two years later, she walked Cannes' red carpet thanks to her participation in the film "Bird people" by Pascale Ferran. The actress then went on to play supporting roles in cinema, confirming another facet of her talent, on the big screen...

At the same time, she released her second album: "Dans la peau". Cinema continues to rise her in fame and the young star notably takes on the leading role in "Le brio", directed by Yvan Attal. Her performance is rewarded with a César for most promising actress. At the same time she also composes the song "Ce qui nous lie est là" for the film of the same name, by Cédric Klapisch. "Lost", her third album, is released in 2018. The singer reveals political lyrics in this album, with songs such as "Dhaouw", a song in which she evokes the deadly repression of October 17, 1961, when the French police intervened in a demonstration on the Algerian war of independence. The young singer takes a stand, gets involved, sometimes creating debate or controversy. She also continues her cinematographic adventures, among others in "Curiosa" by Lou Jeunet. In 2021 she releases her fourth album, "Facile x Fragile". In the most intimate song of the album "Facile", she recounts the complicated moments of her life as an artist and her moments of doubt. The release of this new opus is followed by a tour, during which the singer unveils a new single, "Mon roi".

A multifaceted artist who was received a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in July 2024. "I have an immense awerness for my ancestors, my lineage, their path, their light and the steps they took, the lands they trod on and the seeds they planted," commented the young woman that day.
