Which wines hold the least calories?
For wine lovers who are wondering about the relationship between their favorite drink and weight gain, here are some pointers that can always be useful. Several studies and surveys have been conducted to identify the least caloric wines and to classify them according to their style. Good to know for oenophiles who want to stay in shape.
These scientific studies generally focus on the different grape varieties in wines most drunk by the French (and others). A grape variety is a specific variety of grape used for the production of a particular type of wine. Each grape variety has distinct characteristics in terms of taste, aroma, color and texture, which greatly influences the character and flavor of the wine produced from these grapes.
Which wines should you choose to stay in shape?
Do you like bubbles? Opt primarily for sparkling wines and champagnes, which are your options with the least calories. With only 80 calories per 100ml (a flute is 125ml), the wines of the Champagne method and similar win the prize for the wines with the least calories.
Otherwise, opt for a glass of dry white wine such as Chardonnay (Burgundy, Pays d'Oc, etc.), Riesling (Alsace) or Sauvignon (Loire), which contain around 86 calories per 100ml. Muscadet, Pouilly-Fumé, Mâcon, Sancerre, Vouvray, dry Bergerac, among others… are quite low in calories; there is plenty of choice in the French vineyards.
For dessert, if you are watching your excess weight, forget the delicious sweet white wines (Sauternes, Monbazillac, ... at 100 calories per 100ml), loaded with residual sugar as well as their cousins, the natural sweet wines (like Muscat, Banyuls, 150 calories per 100ml).
For lovers of spring or summer rosés, count 86 calories per 100ml of rosé wine, a value comparable to dry white wine. Rosé can therefore be among the chosen ones for a moderate diet.
Do you prefer red? Look for labels mentioning the Merlot or Pinot noir grape varieties (Burgundy, Alsace). These are your scale's best friends, around 89 calories per 100ml.
Conclusion: by opting for a glass of Burgundy, you're sure not to go wrong. The white wines of this region are vinified with Chardonnay and the Burgundy reds are exclusively composed of Pinot Noir.
Unfortunately, Burgundies are not the cheapest wines, so you also risk losing weight... in your wallet!
Of course, a more radical approach is to avoid all unnecessary calorie intake and to do without wine and alcohol in favor of a healthy and balanced diet.
Moderation remains, as everyone knows, the basis of all consumption...
