"Ukrainian invasion of Russia should create buffer zone"

The Ukrainian incursion into the Russian border region of Kursk aims to create a buffer zone between the two countries at war. Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky said this Sunday evening.

"Our main task in defensive operations is to destroy as much Russian war potential as possible and carry out the largest possible counteroffensive," he said. A buffer zone on the attacker's territory is part of that," Zelenski said in a video on X. "Anything that damages the Russian army, Russia, their military industry and economy will ensure that the war does not expand further and bring us closer to a just end to this attack."

Ukraine's assault on Russian territory in the Kursk border region began on Aug. 6. Ukrainian troops crossed the border with Russia almost two weeks ago now and immediately advanced briskly. And that went surprisingly smoothly. According to Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Sirsky, after only a few days, his troops "already had 1,000 square kilometers of Russian territory under control."
