"Putin is a sick old man who threatens the whole world"
On Saturday, Ukraine celebrated its Independence Day, the day it broke away from the Soviet Union in 1991.
In a video to mark the occasion, President Volodimir Zelensky called Putin an ‘old sick man from the Red Square who constantly threatens the whole world with the red button’. The Kremlin is threatening a nuclear disaster should Ukraine attempt an attack on the Kursk nuclear power plant.
In the video, Zelensky praised Ukraine's boldness in venturing an invasion of Russia: since 6 August, Ukrainians have controlled dozens of villages and hundreds of square kilometres of territory in the Russian border region of Kursk. ‘Russia wanted to destroy Ukraine, but the war has now returned to Russia. Our enemy will know what the Ukrainian retaliation means,’ the Ukrainian president said. ‘Those who want to sow evil in our country will reap the fruits on their own soil.’
While Ukraine is achieving successes in the Kursk region, Russia does gain ground in eastern Ukraine.
