“London, Berlin and Washington could become the Kremlin’s next targets”
Dmitry Medvedev, who was president of Russia from 2008 to 2012 and is a major ally of Vladimir Putin, warns the West, and particularly Germany.
Medvedev, now vice-president of the Russian Security Council, did not appreciate the recent publication of an article in the German daily Bild at all. According to him, the West praised the return of German tanks to Russian soil.
In March 2024, Taras Kuzio of the Atlantic Council think tank in Washington reported that Medvedev had warned the West “against possible nuclear attacks against Washington, Berlin and London, and had vowed to seize more Ukrainian territory, including Kyiv". Most recently, on August 9, Putin's ally once again expressed his willingness to get involved in open combat. Following the publication in the Bild, he directly threatened Berlin on X (ex Twitter).
He writes: "the German newspaper Bild published a revanchist article in which it proudly announced the return of German tanks to Russian territory." According to Newsweek, and relayed by The Daily Digest, Medvedev is referring to the invasion of the Soviet Union by Nazi Germany in 1941. "In response, we will do everything to bring in the most recent Russian tanks on the 'Platz der Republik'", he adds. The Platz der Republik is one of the main public squares in Berlin and is located opposite the Reichstag, where the German Federal Parliament meets, specifies The Daily Digest.
Newsweek, however, reminds Medvedev that Germany is part of NATO and that any attack on this member state would force Berlin's allies to provide aid (according to Article 5 of the NATO treaty).
