Constant threat looms over the Russians

After being confronted with “one of the most significant drone attacks” in its history, Moscow is (legitimately) wondering whether Ukrainian forces will maintain this intensity of strikes.

In an interview with La Dépêche du Midi, former French officer and writer Guillaume Ancel gives his opinion on the continuation of the war in Ukraine.

According to the writer, Ukraine's recent drone attack is part of an important demonstration for Kiev “since the Ukrainians are trying to convince the allied countries to let them use medium-range weapons. The allies are still reluctant because it is not the same thing to use an American missile to strike a Russian military base 300km from the border. Ukraine shows that they are doing it on their side, that the red line has long been crossed.” Specifying that the real objective behind the surprise operation carried out in Kursk has nothing to do with military matters:

“Nobody cares who owns the Seim River. On the other hand, the fact that in Russian society people say ‘Did you know that the Ukrainians bombed Moscow?’ that changes things.”

And what about civilians? What is the threat? The risk for civilians is, according to Guillaume Ancel, as likely as a car accident. “There is nevertheless an unpleasant feeling, as there is in Ukraine. Namely that civilians who live hundreds of kilometers from the frontline are not safe. Psychologically, this feeling of threat is very painful. Kiev wants the Russians to feel threatened. Instilling this threat in Russian society is their way of mirroring the war of the Russians.”
