Morocco cries foul over African Ballon d'Or
The African Ballon d'Or ceremony was controversial, and in many ways reminiscent of the European Ballon d'Or, for which Brazilian Vinicius was the overwhelming favorite.
The big favorite was Achraf. The PSG full-back played a key role in Morocco's success at the Olympic Games. What's for more, the gala was being held in Morocco and everyone thought he was the winner. But the surprise came when Nigerian player Ademola Lookman was finally awarded the prestigious African Ballon d'Or.
“The same thing happened to Ashraf as it did to Vinicius,” said a number of Moroccan fans.
Lookman has already scored 21 goals and provided 41 assists in 2024, an impressive record that makes him one of Europe's most decisive players. His versatility and goal-scoring ability have made him an essential part of the Atalanta team.
The new African Golden Ball winner was moved and grateful for the award, which comes at a key moment in his career. “I'd like to thank the presidents, clubs and fans for the support they've given me. For me, this award is a blessing, for me, for my family, for my national team, to be recognized as the best African player is incredible, I'm very proud,” said Lookman after receiving the African Ballon d'Or.
