Update Remco's accident: fracture for Olympic champion
Remco Evenepoel was involved in an accident on training in Belgium on Tuesday morning. He was taken by ambulance to the nearby Erasmus hospital in Anderlecht.
According to his father, contacted by Sporza, Remco fell after a Bpost van swung open his door. The cyclist did not lose consciousness and was taken away by ambulance.
Evenepoel was on a training ride in the Pajottenland and was coming from the direction of the Lenniksestraat. At the Kerkplein in Oetingen, he then crashed into the door of a Bpost postal car. The postwoman is said to have suddenly swung her door open without looking, after which the Olympic champion was unable to avoid the door.
His bike broke in two in the accident. Remco remained conscious and sat upright after the fall.
After initial examinations, it already appeared that he had broken his left collarbone, the true severity of the injury will be further investigated at Herentals hospital.
Evenepoel's season was due to start in February. The next few hours will be crucial to determine the severity of his injuries. It remains to be seen what the impact will be on his winter preparation and his planning for 2025.
