NASA claims China can slow Earth rotation and make days longer
NASA has claimed that China’s Three Gorges Dam could slightly slow the Earth's rotation and extend the length of days.
Located in Hubei province in central China, the massive infrastructure can hold an astonishing 40 trillion liters of water. Its filling could cause a slight shift in the Earth’s axis, lengthening days by 0.06 microseconds.
The dam spans the Yangtze River, Asia’s longest river, and generates more electricity than any other hydroelectric power station in the world.
According to the American space agency, the dam's activity could therefore have an impact on the planet’s rotation.
The Three Gorges Dam was inaugurated in 2012, 18 years after construction began.
