Padlocking your suitcase? Security guard reveals why you shouldn't do it

Off to the airport, suitcase in hand? If you're convinced that padlocks are a guarantee for security purposes and the ultimate barrier against loss or theft, it could be quite the opposite...

So says an American Internet user, an airport security guard, on the Reddit platform.

While the discussion was focused on the secrets airport employees never reveal to passengers, the security guard intervened, revealing this open secret: padlocks are far from being a good deterrent.

On the contrary, the presence of a padlock is a sign that something of value is hidden in the suitcase. To back up his point, the Internet user, an airport employee, shared a video on TikTok showing an employee piercing the zipper of a piece of luggage with a pen.

“The pen-on-zipper technique has been around for tons of years, so I wanted to show it to you so you know to be wary of it.”

If you really want to deter thieves, the American security agent advises investing in a suitcase cover. The zipper is then covered with an “extra layer of security”.
