Christmas cake murder: family celebration ends in 3 deaths

In Brazil, a gruesome Christmas is causing a stir among the public.

Three women died in the Brazilian town of Torres after eating the same traditional Christmas cake. Three other family members, including the woman who allegedly made the cake, were hospitalized seriously ill. Meanwhile, the daughter-in-law of the woman who had brought the cake was arrested. She is suspected of murder and attempted murder.

Those who ate a piece of the cake at the family party on Dec. 23 immediately complained about its bitter and peppery taste. After investigation, it appears that traces of the heavy metal arsenic were present in the bodies of the three deceased women. Arsenic was also found in the blood of other family members who ate of the cake.

Police investigations now reveal that the daughter-in-law of the woman who baked the cake was allegedly behind the poisoning. She was arrested. It is not yet clear exactly how she proceeded. Meanwhile, one more victim is fighting for her life in the hospital.
