UK: Red squirrels could die out due to pox epidemic
British red squirrels could fall victim to a pox epidemic spread by grey squirrels.
Originally from North America, grey squirrels arrived in other parts of the world in the late 19th century. This invasive species poses a significant threat to red squirrels, which could eventually disappear from the UK.
Red squirrels are at risk from their American counterparts, which transmit a deadly disease known as squirrel pox. While harmless to humans, the disease is fatal to red squirrels.
Several cases of squirrel pox have been reported in various towns across England. Animal protection organizations are urging action to contain the outbreak.
The Cramlington and District Red Squirrel Group has asked residents in Cramlington, Blyth, Seaton Sluice, New Hartley, Seaton Delaval, and Seghill to refrain from leaving food in their gardens. Squirrels often spread the disease by sharing the food they eat.
