Baltic Sea sabotage: Finland discovers anchor that severed cable

Finnish police have reported finding the anchor responsible for severing an undersea internet cable connecting Finland to Estonia.

Last month, Finland detained the Eagle S, an oil tanker transporting Russian oil, which is suspected of deliberately dragging its anchor along the seabed, damaging the Estlink 2 cable and four other telecommunications cables.

"The location where the anchor was found is along the route of the Eagle S ... towards the western end of the drag trace found on the seabed," Finland's National Bureau of Investigation said in a statement.

The ship’s crew is under suspicion of sabotage and may face trial in Finland, along with the Eagle S’s owner, according to Finland’s Deputy Prosecutor General, Jukka Rappe, in a statement to Reuters.

As part of the ongoing investigation, Scandinavian authorities have imposed a travel ban on the crew.

According to Finnish customs, the Eagle S is believed to be part of Russia’s shadow fleet, which delivers oil covertly to circumvent Western sanctions.
