Nearly all vehicles purchased in Norway in 2024 were electric

Nine out of ten cars bought in Norway in 2024 were electric vehicles, according to vehicle registration data, as the Scandinavian country moves closer to its goal of having only electric cars on the roads.

The Norwegian Road Federation reported that 88.9% of vehicles purchased in 2024 were electric, up from 82.4% in 2023.

Tesla emerged as the most popular brand, followed by Volkswagen and Toyota, while Chinese car manufacturers captured 10% of the market.

Norway heavily penalizes gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles and offers financial incentives to encourage electric vehicle (EV) adoption. Since 2023, Oslo has also exempted EVs from customs duties and VAT.

This strategy is already yielding results, with strong support from local governments since its implementation.

"Norway will be the first country in the world to pretty much erase petrol and diesel engine cars from the new car market," said Christina Bu, head of the Norwegian EV association.

"Very often we see in other countries that someone puts tax incentives or exemptions and then they pull back again," she added.
