The world’s largest waterfall lies 2,000 meters beneath the ocean
The world’s largest waterfall is located more than 2,000 meters below the ocean’s surface, specifically in the Denmark Strait between Greenland and Iceland.
Known as the Denmark Strait Cataract, this underwater waterfall plunges about 3,500 meters and carries an astonishing volume of 162 million cubic meters of water. At over 2,000 meters tall, it far exceeds the height of Angel Falls in Venezuela, the tallest waterfall on land.
The cataract forms due to temperature differences between water masses that converge in the strait.
This area is where cold waters from the Nordic seas flow southward and meet warmer waters from the Irminger Sea.
At the base of the strait, a series of underwater cascades begins, ranging from depths of 609 meters to 3,000 meters.
