Tokyo launches 4-day week to encourage Japanese lovemaking

By introducing a 4-day week, Japan's capital hopes to boost the country's birth rate.

As 20 Minutes points out, Japan is suffering from a demographic tragedy that is ever growing. With an average of 1.2 children per woman, an additional 0.9 are needed in order to ensure that the country's birth rate exceeds the death rate.

To be more precise, Tokyo is planning this measure for mothers who are civil servants, working for the mayor's office. It will be implemented in April 2025.

Nearly half of Japanese make love less than once a year

Yuriko Koike, the city's governor, assures us that working styles will be reviewed “...with flexibility, ensuring that no one has to give up their career due to life events such as childbirth or childcare”. In keeping with this logic, Japan has finally authorized paternity leave.

But it will take time to boost the birth rate. According to a study published in 2024 in the World journal of men's health, 45.7% of Japanese men make love less than once a year, reports 20 Minutes.
