COVID throwing a spanner in the works at the Olympics?
The COVID-19 virus has been rearing its head more fiercely in recent weeks and could play a major role at the Olympics, which start this week in Paris.
During the last Tour de France, cyclists were already arming themselves with mouth caps to avoid being infected by the coronavirus, which is raging more fiercely again. The Paris Olympics (from Friday 26 Jul 2024 to Sunday 11 August 2024) could also see the virus make its presence felt. Across the world, a rise in infections is being recorded.
Cases of coronavirus infection have already been noted in training facilities where athletes prepare for the Games. Five players of the water polo team from Australia became infected with the virus and were placed in isolation. In French training camps there was already news of corona cases in the judo, football and athletics teams.
Paris will be the first Olympic Games since the 2021 Tokyo Summer Games and the 2022 Beijing Winter Games were held in COVID bubbles with strict testing protocols.
