Briton scratches name in house in Pompeii

A 37-year-old British tourist was caught by security staff at the Pompeii archaeological site this week when he was scratching his initials into a wall of the Casa delle Vestali.

By his own admission, the man wanted to scratch the initials of himself, his two daughters and the date of their visit on the ancient wall "to leave a memory of their visit to the site". A picture of the marks the English tourist left on the wall appeared on Facebook.

According to Italian news agency ANSA, the man apologised for his act but it is not yet clear what sanction he may face.

Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts more than 2.5 million visitors a year.
