"A new covid variant that's wiping people out"

A new Covid variant is spreading around the world and is set to become the most common.

A GP in Greater Manchester has told the Manchester Evening News exactly what is happening in her practice. These include major symptoms of coronavirus that “really seem to wipe people out” and are different to the milder effects of previous variants.

According to Dr Helen Wall, a GP in Bolton, one of the main challenges doctors are facing at the moment is that many of the symptoms overlap with a host of illnesses that often appear as the weather starts to cool down and children return to school.

The symptoms associated with the XEC variant are similar to those already known: cough, sore throat, persistent headaches, fever and, in some cases, a loss of taste and smell. Although it is spreading rapidly, particularly in Europe, it's not expected to be any more dangerous than its predecessors. The recommendations in case of infection therefore remain the same: limit social contacts and isolate yourself as soon as symptoms appear.
