Beware, octopuses might control the world
Scientists have warned that if humans were to vanish, octopuses could become the dominant species on Earth.
According to Professor Tim Coulson of the University of Oxford, octopuses have attributes that make them well-suited to leading the planet.
In an interview with The European, Coulson explained that these marine animals possess the "dexterity and intelligence" needed to evolve and potentially "build a civilization." He further noted that their advanced communication skills and ability to solve complex problems make them the "brains of the sea."
"With evolutionary advances, it is possible, if not probable, that they might develop ways to breathe outside of water and eventually hunt terrestrial animals like deer, sheep, and other mammals – assuming they have survived the catastrophic event that drove humans extinct," Tim Coulson said.
"Random mutations, unforeseen extinction events, and population bottlenecks can all significantly influence the trajectory of evolution, making it challenging to determine whether another species will develop human-level intelligence or the inclination to construct cities," he added.
