Baltic Sea sabotage: Finnish investigators discover underwater mark
Finnish investigators have uncovered an underwater trail stretching nearly 100 kilometers around the site where a cable was severed on Christmas Day.
The ship suspected of carrying out this act of sabotage is named Eagle S and sails under the flag of the Cook Islands. It is believed to be part of a covert Russian fleet that transports Russian oil production worldwide, circumventing embargoes.
The electrical cable connecting Finland to Estonia will take several months to repair, leading to an increase in electricity prices in the Baltic country.
"Our current understanding is that the drag mark in question is that of the anchor of the Eagle S. We have been able to clarify this matter through underwater research,” the police chief investigator, Sami Paila, said on Sunday to national broadcaster Yle.
Estonian officials, meanwhile, have acknowledged that identifying the culprit will not be easy, even though suspicions quickly turned toward Russia.
