UK and Ireland: New Year weather set to provoke havoc and disrupt flights

People urged to stay away from beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths, and roads

Large parts of mainland UK and Northern Ireland will likely suffer severe weather over the coming hours of December 31. The north of England is on alert as the Environment Agency has issued two flood warnings for the North Sea.

Residents and visitors are urged to stay away from beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths, and roads as high tides and strong winds are anticipated today from approximately 3:45 PM onwards. The views can sometimes be spectacular, but they can also be highly dangerous.

In addition to the flood warnings, a yellow weather warning for high-speed winds is in effect until 11 PM, further complicating the coastal conditions.

Coastal flood warnings

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police stated, “Coastal flood warnings have been issued. Please stay safe and avoid coastal areas, as large waves and spray can pose significant dangers.”

Authorities assure the public that following this high tide, conditions are expected to stabilize, with no further flooding anticipated. The situation will be monitored closely, and updates will be provided as necessary. Residents are advised to exercise caution and remain vigilant during this weather event.

In Northern Ireland, meanwhile, a yellow weather warning for strong winds is in place. Gusts of 45 to 50 mph are expected, perhaps reaching 60 to 65 mph in a few areas. Some delays are expected on road, rail, air and ferry transport.

Those travelling are encouraged to check road conditions and adapt their plans if necessary.
