New York traffic completely shut down for incredible phenomenon: amazement all around!

Twice a year, New York City hosts a spectacular event, better known as Manhattanhenge, Manhattan's solstice. It is an unforgettable moment that captivates hundreds of New Yorkers and tourists.

The spectacular sunset took place on 29 May at 20:12 (local time) and will take place again on 12 July at 20:20. By then, all cameras are and will be in full use!

This Manhattan solstice takes place about 21 days before and after the actual summer solstice, reports media outlet Futura-Sciences. A weather phenomenon that in itself is a classic sunset, with one difference: the position of the sun. It sets precisely between the buildings on the east and west sides of Manhattan, offering a breathtaking spectacle.

‘The solar orb appears surrounded by skyscrapers and the rays of light concentrate on certain streets (14th Street, 23rd Street, 34th Street, 42nd Street and 57th Street),’ Futura-Sciences explains. With no clouds on the horizon, the streets and facades of the buildings were bathed in sunlight, which sparkled in unison. During this magical moment, the city's traffic was closed, allowing spectators and photographers to enjoy the scene in peace.

It was an astrophysicist at the American Museum of Natural History who discovered the phenomenon in 2002 and gave it its nickname (Manhattanhenge), referring to a large megalithic monument in the UK, Stonehenge.
