"Metres-high catastrophic storm surge" coming
The residents of the west of the American state of Florida are anxiously preparing for the passage of the heavy hurricane Helene.
Helene swept across the Gulf of Mexico as a Category 1 and will make landfall in western Florida today. The tropical hurricane is developing rapidly and will be labeled a major category 4 hurricane when it makes landfall in the US. The National Hurricane Center warns of a catastrophic and potentially deadly situation. A meters-high deluge is therefore expected. The heavy gusts of wind and announced abundant precipitation have residents expecting the worst. Wind speeds of up to 250 kilometers per hour are expected. Five states have already declared a state of emergency ahead of the passage of this tropical cyclone. Weather models predict that Helene will be one of the largest storms to hit the region in years.
