Baby shark born in aquarium with only females
Surprised faces at the Shreveport Aquarium in the U.S. state of Louisiana because baby swift shark Yoko got born there in an aquarium with only females.
Yoko was born in early January after crawling out of an egg in an aquarium with two female sharks. In fact, it had been more than three years since the female sharks had contact with a male animal. But then how could baby shark Yoko be conceived?
According to the aquarium, there are two possibilities: it could be so-called parthenogenesis, a form of asexual reproduction in which the embryo develops in an unfertilized egg. Another possibility could be delayed fertilization, where fertilization occurs long after mating.
