Trump's "Iron Dome" doesn't please Moscow at all: "It's Star Wars"

Last Friday, the American president's bold project was strongly criticized by Moscow.

Building an anti-missile shield comparable to Israel's "Iron Dome", a defense system that protects the territory from missile, drone and rocket strikes, while making it even more efficient by developing protection against intercontinental nuclear missiles? For the spokesperson for Russian diplomacy, Maria Zakharova, the plan is "odious".

"We consider this as a new confirmation of the United States' intention to make space an arena of armed confrontation and to deploy weapons there," she declared during a press briefing. Before adding: "Remember the strategic defense initiative," referring to the "Star Wars" supported by Ronald Reagan during the Cold War, specifies L'Indépendant.

"Star Wars" was an anti-missile defense project (a nod to the film trilogy) that aimed to protect the United States against a potential strategic nuclear strike by deploying resources in orbit around the Earth. As L'Indépendant indicates, this plan was made public in 1983, in the midst of the space and arms race between the USSR and the United States.

Ms. Zakharova, in front of journalists, also affirmed that Trump's plan aimed "explicitly to devalue the strategic deterrence capabilities of Russia and China". "In other words, these American approaches will not help reduce tensions".

As a reminder, the United States had, in May 2024, accused Moscow of deploying a Russian space weapon in the same orbit as an American satellite.
