After death of 19-year-old, Romania seeks revenge on 500 brown bears
Last Tuesday, a 19-year-old woman was violently attacked by a bear while hiking in Romania. The woman did not survive. The bear attacked in the Transylvanian Alps near the city of Brasov. The woman was taking a hike with a friend. The friend managed to escape the rabid bear in extremis. It is possible that the bear in question has rabies.
This is a situation that is of great concern to Romanian President Klaus Iohannis. Romania is the country with the largest number of bears in Europe, nearly 8,000 in total. And since 2023, 7,500 emergency calls have been received. Over the past 20 years, 26 people have been killed by bears in Romania. During the same period, 274 people were also seriously injured in an attack.
The Romanian parliament, meanwhile, passed a law after the deadly attack on the 19-year-old young lady that allows nearly 500 bears to be shot this year. That is about double compared to last year. MPs were recalled from vacation to vote on these additional measures.
