Warning, this food is deadly for your dog!

Recently, on Radio 2, a test was carried out on gingerbread. What did it show? Lotus gingerbread contains less sugar but contains xylitol, a sweetener which is harmful to animals' health. The packaging also states: "Not suitable for animals. Consult a veterinarian immediately if ingested!".

Chris Dusauchoit explains on Radio 2 why gingerbread is particularly dangerous for dogs. "Xylitol is perfectly edible for humans but can be very dangerous for animals, especially dogs. Cats, for example, are much less interested in this type of food, which therefore represents a lower risk."

On the other hand...

Even a tiny portion of gingerbread can be harmful to a dog's health, causing a sharp drop in its blood sugar level (the pancreas produces a lot of insulin). So there is a significant drop in blood sugar and acute liver damage. For animals, this is also called sweetener poisoning. Your dog could die within half an hour. Chris Dusauchoit adds: "1 gram of xylitol can be enough to kill a 20-pound [9kg] dog."

The following products are also dangerous for your dog:

Do not let your dog eat at the table and do not reward it with human treats. Many foods are a risk: chocolate, grapes, raisins and currants, mushrooms, allium species (onions, garlic, chives and leeks), nuts, avocado and products containing caffeine.
