How to grow your own ginger
Ginger is used in all kitchens nowadays. But we all prefer it to be fresh and therefore have to keep going to the store for a new and fresh piece of root. But did you know that you can easily grow ginger yourself?
This is how you do it
Buy a fresh piece of ginger of at least 3cm without damage and with eyes (nodes).
Choose a wide but not too high pot, because the ginger roots grow horizontally. The pot must be at least twice as wide as your piece of ginger. Take 80 percent regular potting soil and 20 percent compost and mix in some fine gravel or other small stones. By doing this, the roots won't become moldy. Place the ginger in the middle of the pot with the nodes facing upwards.
Cover the ginger root with a layer of soil of about 2cm. Now give the plant a first good amount of water. Only water the plant again when you see the first leaves appear. The soil must be slightly moist, but certainly not wet.
Ginger is a tropical plant that likes a warm climate and can't withstand frost. So choose a warm spot, but not in bright sunlight (no direct sunlight).
Harvest
After a few months you can start picking your own ginger. Pick the pieces you need and let the plant continue to grow. Don't forget to keep a piece at the end to be able to plant it once again!
Good luck!
