"The problem's not Russia, but one man's thirst for power"
Invited onto the set of the French news channel LCI, General Michel Yakovleff, former vice chief of staff of SHAPE (NATO) brought his expertise and frankly spoke about the frenzy around Vladimir Putin in recent weeks.
Michel Yakovleff talks about his relations with Russian officials a few years ago:
"When I was at NATO, our friends in the East said, you don't understand the nature of the regime. That's very true. The fact is, deep down, I think the problem is not the Russians. The problem is Putin, his thirst for power, his vision of history, his desire for a role in history, and it turns out that his nation is Russia. But we are clearly facing the aim of one man, it's not the Russian people as such who are involved."
The general continues his argument:
"Putin lives in fear and my conclusion is that if he lives in fear, it's because there are reasons, even the paranoid sometimes have real enemies, a Russian general once told me."
"He is of a worried nature, he must have ulcers, he is someone who lives in fear, if only because he is very good at scaring people and by mirror effect it comes back to him. He is afraid and he knows why, because one day it will stop for him."
