"Some new soldiers refuse to shoot at enemy"

Army superiors and fellow soldiers complain about the mindset and skills of new recruits within the Ukrainian army. So reports AP news agency.

Some new Ukrainian soldiers refuse to shoot at the enemy and have difficulty handling weapons and the basic movements involved in combat. Army superiors and soldiers complained to AP. And that, meanwhile, would already be having catastrophic consequences on the battlefield.

"Some don't want to shoot," a frustrated battalion commander testified. "They see the enemy in the line of fire in the trenches, but don't open fire.... That's why our men are dying. If they don't use their weapon, they are ineffective." Many soldiers also lack basic training, it sounds. The commander and some of his colleagues are therefore calling for better training and screening of soldiers. "The biggest problem is the survival instinct of newcomers. People used to be able to hold out until the last moment. Now they retreat, even during light shelling of firing positions," said one soldier.
