Russia fears new Ukrainian 'Frankenstein tank'
President Volodimir Zelenski may soon unpack the latest innovation from German arms company Rheinmetall. Ukraine's air defense will receive a major quality injection.
Zelenski's call gets hearing
Ukraine will move to the front with a so-called 'Frankenstein' tank combined with a modern anti-aircraft system. The state-of-the-art 'Skyranger' anti-aircraft gun will be mounted on an aged Leopard 1 battle tank that has been modernized with other components. The first example of this tank was commissioned in 1965. The modernized Leopard 1 tank is quite suitable for the rugged terrain in eastern Ukraine and has not been named Frankenstein for nothing because of its composition from different parts, similar to the famous creepy monster from the novel.
The modern anti-aircraft system is praised worldwide. The system can register flight movements within a radius of up to thirty kilometers and therefore offers good resistance to drone attacks. Also, the gun fires up to a thousand shots per minute, an unprecedented speed for guns. In addition, the system uses so-called Ahead ammunition (Advanced Hit Efficiency and Destruction). This allows enemy targets to be shot very accurately with explosive steel particles.
"Ukraine's new Frankenstein tank will scare Putin," writes former British commander Hamish de Bretton-Gordon in Britain's The Telegraph newspaper.
